The only castle in Europe located in the very Center of the City the “Castello Estense” is the symbol itself of Ferrara. Former residence of the Este dukes – governors during the golden age of the City, it has a perimeter moat with drawbridges in defense from unwanted attacks. It was built in 1385 as instrument of political and military control.

An ancient legend tells the tragic love story of Ugo and Parisina respectively eldest son and second wife of Nicola III. They were imprisoned in the Tower of the Lions before being executed. On that occasion, Nicola III killed all the  adulteresses women of Ferrara. It is said, therefore, that in the castle prisons there are two ghosts who still mourn the souls of women died because of them. May 20, 2012 a strong earthquake -5.9 on Richter table (followed by a second quake on May 29) has caused considerable damage to many parts of the structure. Lions tower suffered a small crash. The work of securing started quickly but the complex of external restoration work continued until early summer 2015
